Recorded his 3,000th career strikeout by fanning Kole Calhoun of the Los Angeles Angels for his sixth strikeout of the game in the bottom of the fourth inning on September 28, during his final start of the regular season. He became the 18th player in history to reach this mark. On the other end of the spectrum from deGrom is Yusmeiro Petit, the venerable rubber-armed reliever. Petit's never thrown a pitch harder than 92.9 mph in a big league game, and hasn't even hit an even 92 since 2017, but he's been a crucial element of Oakland's bullpen for the past four seasons. Petit is currently tied for the MLB lead in relief appearances with 45, which is to be expected; since he arrived in Oakland, nobody has thrown more games in relief. And it's not just bulk mop-up duty, either.
Petit has won seven games for Oakland and saved two more, despite striking out just 23 batters. If he keeps that ratio up, he'll become the first pitcher in 15 years to win at least five games while striking out fewer than 3.5 batters per win. As a predictive bit of analysis, that's obviously useless, but it's a fun microcosm for Oakland's fun collection of slightly odd but undeniably effective players. They tied the record set by the 1999 Seattle Mariners and the 2000 St. Louis Cardinals. First is the Twins' catastrophic and unexpected collapse.
Most of all, though, Chicago's rotation has been the best in the American League. Lance Lynn and Carlos Rodón have formed a near-unbeatable 1-2 punch, while Dylan Cease, Lucas Giolito, and Dallas Keuchel have not only been effective, but also healthy. Whatever other rotten injury luck the White Sox have had, it is extremely easy to win baseball games with five healthy, effective, and consistent starting pitchers. The White Sox have had six starting position players either suffer a long-term injury or play poorly enough to get pushed off the roster. One of their best position players, Yasmani Grandal, was hitting .188 before he got hurt .
Their manager even invited opposing teams to throw at one of his own players following a ridiculous "unwritten rules" controversy. And yet the White Sox have an eight-game lead in the AL Central—a lead that's twice as big as any other division leader's—and are on absolute autopilot for October. While most of the focus was on the Padres and Reds for the second National League wild card, the Cardinals quietly snuck in and now hold that final NL playoff spot. • What will Shohei Ohtani's final stat line look like?
But will he get any closer to the 30–30 club? (At 26 stolen bases, he would need a wild weekend to gain admission, but it feels wrong to say anything is truly impossible for Ohtani.) Will he grab the major league lead in triples outright? (He's currently tied at 8 with David Peralta.) Will he somehow find another new way to dazzle us? And even if the answer to all of the above is "no," it's worth taking a moment to watch him for one last time this year and reflect on an unprecedented, marvelous gift of a season. The Red Sox have had 12 players test positive for Covid-19 since Aug. 27, including LHP Chris Sale, SS Xander Bogaerts and OF/2B Kiké Hernandez.
To the Red Sox's credit, they've remarkably held serve. The Red Sox are 10-9 since their outbreak began and remain tied for the second American League wild card spot. If the Red Sox are able to hold on and reach the playoffs, staying afloat during this stretch will have been one of the turning points of their season. Two years after the Nationals won the World Series as the oldest team in baseball, the Giants are once again proving old guys can still play. The Giants offense features the oldest average age in MLB this year, and yet they lead the National League in home runs, rank second in runs scored and are top three in just about every other major category.
Buster Posey , Brandon Belt , Brandon Crawford and Evan Longoria are all hitting at least .260 with OPS' above .880. The pitching staff is the fifth oldest in MLB, too, and has the second-lowest ERA in the majors. GB. GB in baseball standings stands for "games back" or "games behind." The top team in a division will have a dash or a zero in this slot of the standings. For each other team, GB represents the average of the difference in both wins and losses between this team and the division leader.
With Jorge Polanco's 20th home run on August 31 against the Detroit Tigers, the Twins set the Major League record for most players with at least 20 home runs during the season. Polanco became the eighth Twin to reach this plateau, breaking the mark that was set held by seven teams, most recently by the 2018 Los Angeles Dodgers. Márquez, a six-year veteran who's still somehow only 26 years old, doesn't have big strikeout numbers, but he throws a ton of innings and is one of the best in the league at preventing hard contact—even in Coors Field. Put him on a contender, let him throw a shutout in the playoffs, and watch him turn into a superstar overnight. Then I saw Jacob deGrom's name and remembered that he has a 1.08 ERA, and I laughed out loud.
Not to mention the fact that deGrom's ERA hit 1.08 because he doubled his previous ERA over his past three starts—allowing seven earned runs in 20 innings. That's a 3.15 ERA, or exactly the same as Rick Porcello's ERA when he won the Cy Young five years ago. Instead, they were the first team in the majors to hit 50 wins, flying out of the gate to a start. One season removed from averaging 4.56 runs per game, this Twins offense led by Jorge Polanco, Max Kepler, and Eddie Rosario is averaging 5.63 runs per game, the third-highest total in the league.
As much as the Phillies have been frustrating this season, they still have a golden opportunity to make the playoffs. The Phillies enter the weekend three games behind the Braves in the NL East. Only three of their final 16 games will be played against a team with a winning record. With seven games against the Orioles and Pirates in particular, the Phillies have a chance to gain ground quickly if they take care of business against lesser foes.
The Padres lost four straight games before getting now-outfielder Fernando Tatis Jr. back in a win over Arizona on Sunday, falling to six games back of the Dodgers. Though San Diego remains in playoff position as the second wild card team, their lead over the Reds is down to just 2½ games. Patriot League baseball in 2021 will consist of two three-team divisions, but the teams with the top-four overall records, regardless of division, will make the Patriot League Baseball Championship field.
All League games played count toward standings. Recorded his 650th career home run on July 28 against the Baltimore Orioles. He became the sixth player to reach this mark.
With this home run, Pujols also became the first player in Major League history to hit at least 650 home runs and 650 doubles in their career. Shortly before Trevor Story's walk-off blast, rookie Sam Hilliard hit a ninth-inning, game-tying homer off of Brewers closer Josh Hader. Milwaukee wasted a chance to pull even in the standings and, at worst, force a Game 163 if both teams win Sunday. In what was supposed to be a tight race in the NL East this season, the Atlanta Braves have separated themselves from the pack as the clear team to beat in the division with a record. Ronald Acuna Jr. and Freddie Freeman lead a talented young offense that ranks third in the NL in runs per game with 5.29.
Diaz is having the worst season of his career. The pitching staff owns a middle-of-the-road team ERA of 4.66. Pete Alonso has been fantastic this season, as has Jeff McNeil, who leads the NL with a .339 batting average. But the play of these two young stars is going to waste on this floundering club.
The Toronto Blue Jays will be among the teams allowing fans at games, but that's where normalcy ends for them. They will be playing home games at their spring training facility in Dunedin, Florida with limited-capacity crowds in attendance, to start the season. They're hopeful they'll be allowed to return to Toronto sometime this summer.
Well, they are 6-13 in their last 19 games, the worst record in the American League in that time. Yes, even worse than the Orioles, who are 7-12 in the same stretch after walking off on the Yankees on Thursday night. With the skid, the Yankees are now in fourth place in their own division and have dropped out of a wild card spot. This was the sixth year of the current eight-year deals with Fox Sports, ESPN, and TBS.
Fox aired eight weeks of baseball on Saturday Nights which led up to the 2019 Major League Baseball All-Star Game which also aired on Fox. Fox then televised Saturday afternoon games for the final four weeks of the season. FS1 televised games on Tuesday and on Saturday both during the afternoon and night. ESPN televised games on its flagship telecast Sunday Night Baseball as well as Monday and Wednesday nights. TBS televised Sunday afternoon games for the last 13 weeks of the regular season. Fox and ESPN Sunday Night Baseball telecasts were exclusive; all other national telecasts were subject to local blackout.
It's going to be a long rebuild, and it's going to suck for Rangers fans, so this feels like a good time to talk about Jack Leiter. On Sunday, the Rangers spent the no. 2 pick on Al Leiter's son, who just led NCAA Division I in strikeouts, with 179 in just 18 starts. He recorded a 16-strikeout no-hitter against South Carolina this March, and in the College World Series struck out 15 over eight innings in a 1-0 loss to NC State. Jazz Chisholm does a lot of the heavy lifting in terms of making this team entertaining, but he's not alone.
Starling Marte is exactly the kind of offensive table-setter-cum–veteran leader this team's young core needs, and Miami is reportedly taking steps to keep him around past this season. The rotation, headlined by Sandy Alcantara, Pablo López, and Trevor Rogers, is already playoff-caliber. Rogers might be the best pitcher in baseball that nobody's heard of. And the two most exciting Miami arms—Sixto Sánchez and 2020 no. 3 pick Max Meyer—haven't even reached the majors yet this year. Chapman got touched up in three of his last four appearances before the break, which has probably exaggerated his struggles.
And while he's blown four saves, the Yankees came back to win two of those games. One thing to keep an eye on, however, is Chapman's home run rate. Over the first 10 seasons of his career, he just once allowed a HR/FB% higher than 10, or more than four home runs in a season.
This year, he's already up to five dingers, with a HR/FB rate in the 30s, which is even worse than that one Edwin Díaz year. The Yankees are only 4 1/2 games out of a playoff spot at the moment—not all of which can be blamed on Chapman. But if Chapman legitimately struggles to keep the ball in the yard, things could go south very quickly. If you haven't already, you should make your peace with this Giants team as a serious title contender.
Mike Yastrzemski's shocking emergence as a star in 2019 and 2020 was not an outlier, but merely a harbinger of things to come. Steven Duggar, another unremarkable left-handed college outfield prospect, is all of a sudden hitting like Orlando Cepeda. The last remaining holdouts from the Even Year Bullshit teams have rediscovered their lost youth, so much so that it wouldn't be a shock to see Peter Thiel banging on the stadium gates demanding to know their secrets. Chris Sale's miserable season has set the tone for the rest of the pitching staff, which owns a bloated 4.68 team ERA.
Boston still has an elite offense averaging 5.69 runs per game that could slug its way into the postseason, but navigating the Wild Card path in the American League with this pitching staff will be a tall task. The Dodgers on Saturday picked up a game in the National League West, the first time they gained at all in the division since July 28. Sunday was another day of the Giants and Dodgers each achieving the same result, with San Francisco and Los Angeles both winning. The Dodgers end a 5-1 week at four games back in the division, the same as they started the week.
WGN-TV broadcasts of Chicago Cubs and White Sox games concluded at the end of the season. WGN held the local broadcast television rights of both teams since 1948. The network's final telecasts took place on September 28 and September 29 .
Effective with the 2020 season, Cubs games will move exclusively to the new Marquee Sports Network, while White Sox games will air full-time on NBC Sports Chicago. Set the Major League record for most consecutive games with a home run on June 25 against the Toronto Blue Jays. They broke the record that was set in 2002 by the Texas Rangers.
Mlb Standings 2019 National League The streak came to an end at 31 games after not hitting a home run against the New York Mets on July 2. Became the first team in Major League history with nine 5-plus-home-run games in single season on July 25 against the Chicago White Sox. The following night, the Twins became the fastest team in Major League history to reach their 200th home run, doing so in 103 games, 19 games less than the 2005 Texas Rangers. At this point in the calendar, most teams know whether they'll be playing in the postseason or not. But there's still a lot at stake in the final week of the regular season—so here's how each possible playoff team should want things to shake out. So here the Twins find themselves, in fourth place in the AL Central.
Well, would you look who's five games over .500. Seeing the Mariners in the playoff picture this late is like seeing a 15-year-old with a hilariously bad fake ID trying to buy beer. Seattle's minus-50 run differential is the worst by far among teams that are over .500. In fact, no other team with a run differential that bad is within 10 games of .500. The Mariners are 19-8 in one-run games and an astonishing 10-1 in extra-inning contests, which means they've been more lucky than good. Not that it matters how they got here; after all, they don't ask how, they ask how many.
Similar to 2018, the division might require a playoff game to determine the winner. Although the loser would be guaranteed a place in the wild-card game against the Washington Nationals, the preferred spot is a five-game series with the Atlanta Braves. Five divisions and the American League wild card are settled.
On the final day of the 2019 MLB regular season, all eyes will be on the National League Central. It may seem like a stretch to list the Yankees as a surprise in 2019. But this club has been ravaged by injuries to significant players; staff ace Luis Severino has missed the entire season.
Giancarlo Stanton has played only nine games. Aaron Judge and Didi Gregorius missed over half the season. Dellin Betances is on the 60-day injured list.
